Bed Adhesion for 3D printers

3D Printing Beginner Tipps: Bed Adhesion

Tackling Adhesion and Curling Issues with PEI-Coated Print Beds

If you’re experiencing problems with prints not sticking or curling at the corners on a PEI-coated print bed, you’re not alone. Over time, the effectiveness of the PEI surface can diminish. But don’t worry, there are effective solutions to bring your prints back to perfection.

Clean the Bed Properly

Before diving into additional solutions, ensure your print bed is spotlessly clean. Sometimes, residue build-up can affect adhesion. Wash the bed with Isopropanol Alcohol (IPA), but if that doesn’t solve the problem, consider these next steps.

Utilize a Glue Stick

An effective way to enhance adhesion is to apply a thin layer of PVP adhesive glue stick. Here’s how to do it:

  • Apply: Dab the glue stick on multiple spots across the cold bed surface.
  • Spread: Use a damp sponge to spread it into a thin, even film. This method can improve stickiness for several print jobs, and it won’t interfere with auto-leveling.
  • Clean Easily: When necessary, the glue cleans off effortlessly with hot water.

Make sure to use a glue stick specifically labelled as PVP adhesive to see the best results. Verify the label if purchasing online, such as this option on Amazon.

Adjust Bed Temperature

Temperature plays a crucial role in print adhesion:

  • Preheat the Bed: Set your initial bed temperature slightly higher than usual. Even if the sensor reads the correct temperature, the actual surface may be cooler, especially if the printer is starting from cold.
  • Start Hot, Then Cool: Begin the first layer at slightly above the recommended target temperature, then drop down to it for the subsequent layers once the bed has fully warmed up. This ensures the print surface is optimally sticky during critical early layers.

Implementing these techniques should alleviate adhesion and curling issues, giving you smooth, successful prints every time. Adjustments like these can make a significant difference without needing to replace your current print bed.
