From GitHub

Inspired by Doc’s fridge door mod and the EZBake Trident Doom conversion, I set out to design a hinge and latch system that could securely close an extrusion-framed door against 3mm foam tape, while also yielding some satisfying sounds.

This solution is what fit the bill for me. The door opens smoothly, and can be easily removed from the hinges simply by lifting up. The latch mechanism actually draws the door closed against the sealing foam when closed, and clicks shut with the help of some magnets. It makes nice sounds.

What’s not included?

You’ll need to source

  • 3D printed parts (STLs can be downloaded here)
  • 3mm panels (available on OneTwo3D here)
  • 0.3mm foam tape (to tape along the sides) or 2mm foam tape (to tape over the edges) if 6mm panels are not fitting correctly due to tolerances in panel or extrusion slot size.

Due to variations in the anodising process, the door frame colours may vary from the colour of the LDO printer frames.

If you own a LDO Trident 300mm printer kit, please go for the “300mm cubed” kit, as the LDO kits are taller than the vanilla 300mm Trident.

It is a kit, but why they create a kit that is not correct, I am not sure.

The extrusions I received had a channel gap measuring 6.3mm vs. the usual 6.0mm Misumi ones. So, with 3.0mm thick clear panel as per the git BOM, this kit rattles freely in the frame, with all rubber sealing correctly inserted. Fully assembled it seems cheap and janky and not the lux mod you would have hoped for.

For clarity they should advertise you may receive these loose or different extrusions, and give the customer awareness that further mods are needed to the provided ‘kit’ to fix it to be right. Sneaky… just tell us. To have to customer find out AFTER purchasing and assembling that they need to investigate and source foam strips to MacGyver something that could have been complete from LDO to begin with is not a pleasant customer experience, and instead leaves you irked about time wasted and time needed to pay for and receive foam, take the door apart agaiiin and experiment with thickness and placement to get it snug.

That is Not a ‘kit’. 2 stars only because it forms a door shape, it otherwise p’s me off enough to be 1 star. LDO wasting our time. This mod should have been joyful and cool.

Hi James, sorry for this experience. LDO extrusions are specified for a slot size of 6.2mm +/- 0.2mm (to make sure that slot in T-nuts fit under all circumstances). To avoid the rattling you can use foam tape

Thank you for acknowledging and responding. Thank you also for updating the product page today to say that the customer will need to source more varieties of foam tape than that is included in the kit, due to my review.

Unfortunately, I’m left with a rattling door still due to the LDO extrusions being wider-slotted than the BOM predicts (where no foam tape is needed on the clear panel itself). I hope LDO can update the kit they are putting out to provide the foam tape varieties to bring the kit towards Whopping’s design expectation. His design clearly expects for 6.0mm slot width (+tolerances) (Misumi extrusion) with Misumi rubber seals, so with LDO knowing that their slot width is wider, they should communicate this on the product as deviating from BOM? I have not LDO used extrusions before and didn’t know from the kit description when purchased, that they are looser.

It remains strange, and I wonder why, LDO did not foresee people would have rattling doors with their extrusions when buying 3mm thick acrylic/PC clear panels as per github BOM, with their own extrusions.

Very impressed with this kit, packaged extremely nicely and everything is there, looking forward to putting it together. Ignore the post about a rattling panel, they’re clearly not a maker if they can’t get rid of a bit of a rattle… 😉
